Abstract
295,307. Graseby, R. C. May 7, 1927. Hydraulic and pneumatic transmission for a motor vehicle having hand-operated steering gear with a lost-motion connection 5, 6 between the drop arm 3 and the drag link 4 comprises, in combination, power operating means, a first lever 9 operatively connected thereto and to the drag link, and a second lever 15 pivoted at 14 on the first lever adapted to operate the valves 16, 17 controlling the admission of fluid to the operating means and to be connected without lost-motion to the steering means, e.g. to the bottom of the drop arm. The lost-motion connection allows the desired valve to be operated before the hand gear acts on the drag link, the latter being moved by the power gear until it catches up to the handgear and thus shuts off the power again. The first lever 9 is pivoted at 10 and is connected by a link 23 to the drag link 4. The second lever is connected by pivoted links 18, 22 to a pin 5 on the drop arm 3, the link 22 having a lost-motion connection 19 with the drag link. The valves and power cylinder 12 are so arranged that when one end of the cylinder is open to the power supply the other is open to the atmosphere. Power may be obtained from the engine induction pipe or from a reduced-pressure pump or a compressor driven by the engine. When the engine is not running the cylinder 12 is arranged to be open to the atmosphere.
