Cigarette. making machines. - In cutting mechanism for a continuous-rod machine, in which the cutting edge describes a surface through space in such a manner as to move with the rod when effecting the cut, a sharpener which is stationary or rotated about a fixed axis is adapted to be brought into surface or line contact with a portion of the surface described by the cutting edge, and the surface of a stationary ledger plate coincides with a portion of the surface described by the cutting-edge. In one form, Figs. 1 and 3, in which a cutter mechanism is provided with a swash-plate device 16 for actuating the blades 10, 11, as described in Specification 248,415, a stationary ledger plate 26, a stationary grinder 25, and a rotary grinder 22 are provided, and the cigarette rod 27 passes through a hole in the ledger plate 26. A modification is described in which the cutter describes an elliptical or circular path. In another form, Fig. 7, a helical cutter 50 is carried by a cylindrical holder 51 rotating about its axis, and the surface of the ledger plate 58 forms part of a cone 57 coaxial with the holder 51. The cigarette rod is shown at 53. In a further form, Fig. 20, a blade 110 forming part of a helix is clamped between plates 111, 112 on a rotary shaft 115 and is adjustable radially for wear by the axial movement of a member 119 having an inclined pin 120 passing through slots in the plates 111, 112 and one of five holes 123 in the cutter. Another form is described in which a helical knife is mounted, between abutments adjustable to enable the pitch of the helix to be varied, on a rotating holder provided with counterbalance weights, the knife being adjustable radially by means such as shown in Fig. 20, and the ledger plate having a conical surface.
