Abstract
294,193. Gramophone Co., Ltd., and Buckle, H. L. T. Jan. 18, 1927. Divided on 291,480. Magazine gramophones. - Relates to automatic gramophones of the kind adapted to play a number of records in succession, irrespectively of the size of the records, and in which the distance through which the tone-arm and sound-box are moved in order to engage the starting-point of a record is determined by means operated by contact with the edge of the record to be played. According to the invention, there is provided a member which is capable of movement independently of the tone-arm or of the means for swinging the tonearm, this member being adapted to be set by contact with a record about to be played, in such a position as to control, in accordance with the size of the record, the means for swinging the! tone-arm and sound-box. The invention is described as applied to the machine described in Specification 291,480 in which, after the playing of a record, the tonearm 3 and sound-box 4 are first raised, and, after automatic removal of the played record are swung outwards by means of a lever 12. When a fresh record has been lifted from a magazine and deposited on the turntable, by means of an arm 7, the tone-arm is moved inwards by the action of a hook 18 pivoted on the lever 12, both the outward and inward movements of the tone-arm being effected by engagement of the members 12 or 18 with a post 16 projecting from an arm 17 fixed to the tone-arm. As soon as the soundbox has reached a position where the stylus is over the starting-point on the fresh record, the inward movement of the tone-arm is stopped by disengagement of the hook 18 from the post 16. The point at which this occurs is determined by means of a lever 21, which is controlled by an horizontally-movable lever 32. This is itself set to the appropriate position by the action thereon of the record as it approaches the turntable. The lever 32 carries two posts 37. 38, one at each end, and by the engagement therewith of the edge of a record, during its transference, the lever is set either to the full-line or dotted-line position, according to the size of the record. The mechanism referred to above is fully described in Specification 291,480.
