Abstract

Distilling zinc.-In a process for extracting zinc in an externally and internally heated vertical muffle, any zinc oxide formed is separated from the zinc vapours before the latter are condensed. The muffle b is charged at a and air is introduced at the bottom. The zinc and zinc oxide vapours are passed through a condenser c comprising plates e through apertures in which a mass of coke progresses. The zinc oxide condenses on the coke and is removed by the conveyer g and the zinc vapour is condensed in the condenser d. The approximate temperatures at various points are as shown in the drawing. Alternatively, the temperatures may be so controlled that the zinc oxide condenses in the upper part of the muffle and is returned as the charge progresses to the hotter, lower part of the muffle, the condenser c being dispensed with.
