Abstract

Clutches, friction.-In a combined hydraulic and hydraulically-actuated friction clutch, the spaces i between the driving-member g and driven members d of the hvdraulic clutch and the spaces e between the frictionclutch driving-discs c and the members d are so arranged that liquid can pass to and from any space without passing through another. The discs d, which are splined to the driven member f, and the driving-member g are provided on adjacent faces with vanes forming cells h, and, when a hollow piston valve n<1>, Fig. 1, is open, oil supplied from a pipe to a ring l passes through passages m and fills and flows through the clutch spaces q, e, i, expelling air through passages o, p and starting the hydraulic drive. On closing valve n<1>, centrifugal pressure is generated in all the spaces, and when a valve n<2> is opened, the oil is expelled through passages r from the spaces e, q, and the friction clutch is engaged, as shown in Fig. 2. The pressure in the spaces h, i may then be augmented by an auxiliary pressure supply through passages j<1>, j<2>. To declutch, valva n<2> is closed and a hollow equalising-valve n<3> opened, which puts the spaces q into communication with the central spaces h, i, thus relieving the friction-clutch pressure. On closing valve n<3> and opening a valve n<4>, the oil is discharged from the central spaces, the residual oil in the spaces q then moving the discs d from the driving-discs c. More than one valve of each type may be provided. The valves may be controlled by electromagnets, Fig. 4 (not shown), or by fluid means, as shown. Oil is supplied by pipes w<1> - - w' to channels v<1> - - v<4>, whence it flows centrifugally by passages x<1> - - x<4> to chambers y<1> - - y<4> having leak-passages z<1> - - z<4>. While the. coil flow is maintained, the valves are held displaced against their springs, which actuate them when the supply is shut off.
