Abstract

The hydraulic-mechanical coupling for two coaxial shafts has two sets of friction discs. Each set is in mesh with one of the shafts. The discs of the driver shaft also include vanes which pump a hydraulic fluid when they are rotating. Turbine blades on the friction discs of the driven shaft are thus rotated by the movement of the hydraulic fluid. when the speed of the two shafts is identical, a valve is opened so that piston clamps the two sets of friction plates axially together. Thus the two shafts are now coupled by mechanical means.
