Linear-dimension gauges. - An apparatus for measuring and sorting workpieces such as lifts for heels for boots or shoes consists in measuring the lifts in a thickness gauging device on a work-table and in indicating to which one of a plurality of receptacles the lift is to be delivered, the lifts being drawn by the operator from a pile along the table top to the gauge and then drawn along to the particular receptacle. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the apparatus comprises a worktable 1 with a receptacle 2 formed thereon, at the left-hand side, to receive the workpieces and from which they can be drawn, by the operator. The measuring device comprises a frame 5 with a work support 6 and downwardly projecting bearing for a vertically slidable spindle 8. The spindle 8, Figs. 4 and 5, which is controlled by a spring 10 housed within the bearing 7 has a projecting arm 13 at its upper end carrying a screwed spindle 14 with a gauging head 15 and lock nut 16. A pin 17 projecting from the spindle 8 near its lower end engages a slot 19 in the bearing to prevent turning and makes contact with a surface on the arm 22 of a bell-crank lever 21 pivoted to the bearing. The other arm 25 of the bell crank extends upwardly and has formed on its end a surface 26 engaging the ball end 27 of a stud 28 attached to an indicating arm 29 under the control of a spring 32 normally tending to move the arm 29 against a fixed stop 132. A link 24 connects the bell-crank to a treadle for raising and lowering the gauge member 15, the arm 29 being at the same time set to indicate the particular receptacle 33 to which the work piece is to be delivered. The stud 28 is adapted to be adjusted in position along the arm 29 and the surface 26 may have portions in different planes so that work pieces of two sizes may be sorted into the same receptacle.
