Abstract
293,853. Lightfoot, E. N. July 15, 1927, [Convention date]. Electric radiators.-Electric heaters comprise a helical resistance 15, Figs. 1 and 3, embedded in granular, refractory, insulating material enclosed by, and in direct and intimate contact with the walls of, a tubular part 10 of a casing formed by a sheet metal trough 12 and a sheet metal plate 14, the trough being bent outwards at right angles to form a flange. 11 at its sides and ends and the plate 14 being secured flat against the flange 11, for example, by foldedover margins, to form heat-dissipating vanes. Terminal pockets 13 in the plate 12 receive insulated terminals 16 between which the resistances 15 is stretched so that its turns are separated. Insulating washers 17 centre the resistance in the part 10 during the introduction of the granular insulation after the resistance is mounted in the casing. Magnesium oxide powder may be introduced through a temporary bent-up tongue in the plate 14 near one terminal pocket 13 and may be disintegrated and compacted by wetting it after its introduction into the casing, all spaces in the casing being filled with water, and by then heating in steam to 300‹ F. or above and drying in a furnace. Alundum or other chemically inert material may be mixed with the magnesium oxide and the casing may be vibrated during the introduction of the oxide.
