Abstract
293,533. Electrical Improvements, Ltd., and Logan, E. A. May 25, 1927. Mechanical cut-outs for overhead and like conductors.-A safety arrangement, for ensuring the cutting off from the supply of overhead conductors in case of breakage, consists in the employment of a pivoted conducting ring or frame attached and electrically connected to and supported by one power conductor and surrounding without normally touching another power conductor, the arrangement being such that breakage of either conductor establishes contact between a conductor and its surrounding frame so producing disconnection of the supply. As shown, in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower earthed conductor A<1> carries a conducting arm D<1> terminating in a frame D surrounding the upper insulated conductor A. The arm D<1> is pivoted to the apex of a triangular frame F (Fig. 3) mounted pivotally on the post B so that if the conductor A' is broken the frame F is moved around its pivot and the conducting frame D brought down into contact with the conductor A. Any breakage of the conductor A causes the portion passing through the frame D to drop into contact therewith. Similar arrangements are described (Figs. 4 and 6, not shown) for lines placed side by side, horizontally. Where, as shown in Fig. 9, an earthed line A<1> of a three phase supply is mounted horizontally between insulated lines A, A<2> a frame D<5> is provided around the outer lines, being suspended from the centre line by a wire E<1> and pivoted by arms F<2> about a rod F'. In a modified form of this arrangement shown in Fig. 8 the line A is surrounded by a frame D arranged as already described with reference to Fig. 1, and the line A<2> is surrounded by a frame D<2> clamped to the earthed framework B<5>, B<6>.
