Adding and subtracting apparatus. - The starting point for a heading or other statement to be placed centrally with respect to the typewritten matter on a sheet is determined by means of a calculator consisting of relatively slidable scales. In the construction shown stationary scales Band C and a slidable scale D are graduated in terms of letter spaces and another slidable scale E, preferably in one with scale D, has similar graduations but of twice the size. To use the device a cursor F is set to the marginal width on scale B and scale D is moved to bring the length of the heading opposite the cursor line. The cursor G, set to the total width of the sheet on scale C, will now show on scale E the point on the line at which the heading should start.
