Abstract

292,137. Naugatuck Chemical Co., (Assignees of Johnston, W. S., and Keen, A. W.). June 15, 1927, [Convention date]. Styrolene.-The last traces of solvent are removed in the recovery of polymerized styrolene from solutions by extruding the solution 7 under pressure from a tube 1 which is surrounded by a jacket 2 through which passes a heated gas 8 under pressure which has the property of permeating the mass of material in the tube 1. The solution 7 containing the gas 8 emerges at an outlet 4<1> in a mouthpiece 4, where the bubbles of .gas escape carrying the last traces of solvent with them, and the solute is left in stick form and in a condition in which it can easily be reduced to powder. The distance between the ends of the tube 1 and the inner face of the mouthpiece 4 is adjustable. In an example a 60 per cent solution of polymerized styrolene in ethylbenzene or other organic solvent is dried by using steam under a pressure of e.g. 115 lbs. to permeate it, the diameter of the extrusion aperture being about 0.20 inch and the passage length 1# inch.
