Abstract

291,534. Bree, E. van. March 7, 1927. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Jacquards; cards, punching.-The selection of the pattern in looms, card-punching machines, &c. is effected by electrostatic forces. As applied to looms current is supplied from the negative pole of a source of electric current to holders for semiconducting members combined into the form of a beam 18 moved up and down in contact with weighted insulated healds 1 hung on conducting wires 2 having parts 3 slidable up and down in U-form iron bands 4, arranged to form a beam 17 and to which current from the positive pole is supplied through wires 9. These are combined into a brush 19 and contact, where allowed, by pattern cards 11 arranged in endless band form with a tinfoil insert connected up through a resistance to the positive pole. The Johnsen Rahbeck effect is set up between the moving semiconducting members and the positively charged wires, whereby the friction is so much increased that these selected wires together with the healds and corresponding warp threads are raised. A modification is described wherein the wires supporting the healds are furnished at their top ends with movable semi-conducting leaves contacting with rising and falling metal bars which may be coated with tungsten, tantalum, or chromium &c., and wherein the return of the healds is effected by a rising and falling beam, the attraction of a magnetic beam being used to tension the shed. In another modification, the wires supporting the healds are caused to be hooked on to the rising and falling metal bars, so that after the coupling has been effected, the supply of current may be cut off. In this case the pattern card may run at constant speed and the wires contacting therewith have a circular movement. A cover of cellophane may be used to protect the apparatus, dry and dust free air being blown in. The cards may be similarly protected. Particles of dust settling on the lifting members may be removed by means of pieces of velvet on the heald supporting members. The semi-conducting members mav be made from resin mixed with finely divided iron or aluminium &c., or may consist of a material such as aluminium which automatically coats itself with a semi-conducting layer of an oxygen compound. Means are described for working with pattern cards punched solely for selecting the pattern and not the binding.
