Abstract

291,215. Timson, A. R. May 11, 1927. Delivery apparatus; cutting-apparatus.-Sheets severed from a printed web by tear-off rollers 45<a>, Fig. 1, are collected in a pile 9 on guides which are operated by ratchet mechanism controlled by an interchangeable bluff plate so as to drop and allow the pile to fall on to a conveyer 51 or other receiver when a predetermined number has been collected. The guides are in the form of arms 1, 2, spaced at 90‹ apart on shafts 3, 4 respectively coupled together for simultaneous movement in opposite directions by gearwheels 5 - - 8. A spring-actuated lever 11 engaging a squared block 10 on the shaft 3 prevents movement of the supports during the collecting of the sheets. Gearwheels 39, 38 couple the shaft 3 to a shaft 19 which is oscillated from a driving shaft 14 so as to turn the supports 1, 2 through 90‹ when the required number of sheets have been collected by means of a spring-pressed pawl 25 engaging ratchet-discs on the shaft 19 and pivoted on a bracket 17 freely mounted on the shaft and connected by a rod 16 to an eccentric 13 on the shaft 14. Three ratchet discs 27, 33, 36 of decreasing diameter are mounted on the shaft 19. the first two being freely mounted and the third being keyed thereto. The pawl 25 is wide enough to cover the three discs, but because of the difference in diameter, normally engages the disc 27 only. Deep notches 32 in the disc 27 allow the pawl 25 to engage the disc 33 at intervals and similar deep notches 34 in the disc 33 allow the pawl to engage the disc 36 when the notches 31, 34 are in register, so as to operate the supports 1, 2. Retaining pawls 40, 41 are provided for the discs 27, 33. To vary the number of sheets collected in each pile, a bluff plate 30, having one or more deep notches 31 is provided, so as to prevent the pawl 25 entering one or more of the notches 32 in the disc 27. Bands 45 carry the sheets into position over the supports 1, 2 when a pressure member 47, carried by an oscillating shaft 48, pushes them on to the pile 9.
