Abstract

291,120. Scott, E. K. Nov. 24, 1926. Fibres, crimping and curling; fibres, roughening mechanically.-To produce an artificial textile material resembling wool in that it will full, mill and felt, the filaments composed of materials employed in the manufacture of artificial silk &c. and extended in a similar manner, are subjected while in a more or less plastic condition to a mechanical treatment which will produce curls, spirals or crimps along their length and will also produce on the surface of the filaments, serrations, projections or nodules. For example, the filament A, Fig. 1, may be passed between a pair of fluted rollers C to produce crimps on the filaments, and the surface of the rollers is etched or finely engraved to give the necessary roughness to the surfaces, and the process may be repeated at a second pair of rollers D, arranged at a suitable angle to the first pair in order to impress on the filaments crimps in a different .plane; or the filaments may be projected downwardly from a nozzle j, Fig. 4, either rotating in a circle of small diameter or moved rapidly backwards or forwards as by a pin k and rod K. so as to produce ends or crimps respectively, and at the same time nodules &c. are produced on the filaments by vibrating the nozzle in a vertical direction as by the cam L acting on the rod K; or the filaments A may be passed over a fluted roller M. Fig. 5, and at the same time beaten bv rapidly-vibrating reeds N forming part of the armature of an electromagnet P, and in this case the surface of the roller is finely engraved or etched to produce the desired roughness of the surface of the filaments; or to produce a curled filament these may be arranged in front of the extrusion orifice B, Fig. 6, a spiral tube R through which the filament passes, and through the tube is also circulated by means of a pump S a stream of hardening fluid carrying in suspension a powdered material such as powdered collulosic material, which by adhering to the fila. ment roughens its surface; or a spiral form may be produced by extruding the, solution through a passage of oval cross-section and having a twist in the direction of its length, or by extruding the solution through an inclined aperture E, Fig. 3, arranged tangentially to the passage H through which flows a stream of hardening fluid. The filaments may be cut into lengths as by means of a knife G, Fig. 3, and they may be used alone or in conjunction with wool fibres. Fabrics made from these fibres do not sag and they exhibit a mellowness and softness; and the fibres mav be used for the manufacture of felted materials such as felted fabrics, hats, &c.
