Ornamental metalwork.-The following steps are employed for producing, on thin sheets of metal or other material, designs or pictures resembling etchings, engravings, or enamel work. The design is formed in relief by embossing or casting, a mat surface is formed on the high parts, the whole surface is coated with a different material, the coating is removed from the high parts and, in some cases, the larger flat parts, and finally the sheet is flattened by pressure or rolling. The design may be produced by a steel or brass die or by a die consisting of a leaf or a, piece of lace mounted on leather or vulcanite. The mat surface gives a worn effect and may be. produced by a rotating steel-brush, a template being employed in some cases. The coating may be formed by oxidation, electrodeposition, or an air brush. Metal sheets may be provided with a removable, backing of paper, wood &c.
