Abstract

290,860. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 21, 1927. Sodium nitrate; double salts.-Sodium nitrate is recovered from aqueous solutions, such as those obtained by leaching caliche, by converting it into a double or mixed salt sparingly soluble at ordinary temperatures, and treating the precipitate thus obtained for separation of the sodium nitrate. Preferably sodium sulphate is used to precipitate the double salt NaNO3. Na2SO4.H2O, the mother liquor after separation of the double salt being used for leaching more caliche, if desired after cooling to say 8‹C to separate excess of sodium sulphate. By heating the double salt to above 70‹C with just sufficient water to dissolve its content of sodium nitrate, the latter passes into solution and after separation by hot filtration of the residual sodium sulphate may be recovered bv cooling the solution. The residual liquor may form the decomposing solution for a further quantity of the double salt.
