Abstract

290,710. Roberts, J. H. T. Feb. 12, 1927. Diaphragms.-A sound reproducing diaphragm is built up of layers of paper &c. having parallel corrugations in such a manner that the corrugations of one sheet are disposed at an angle to those of an adjacent sheet so as to produce rigidity in all directions over the surface of the diaphragm. As shown the diaphragm is cut out from the assembly comprising two sheets a, b of corrugated paper adhesively secured to a sheet of paper c. Two sheets of plane paper may be interposed between the corrugated sheets or alternatively the corrugated sheets may be secured directly together, the outer surfaces being surfaced by two plane sheets and a strip or band being secured around the edge of the diaphragm so as to form a closed cylinder. The diaphragm may be built up of a plurality of corrugated sheets and may be impregnated with varnish &c. Instead of paper, sheet metal may be employed. As applied to loud speakers, the diaphragm may be supported at its centre upon the armature of the reproducer unit and its edges may be free or resiliently mounted; alernatively the diaphragm may be secured at its edge to a spider supported on the reproducer armature. The Provisional Specification describes a diaphragm wherein the sheets may have parallel or radial ribs.
