Sterilizing milk and other liquids. - In apparatus for sterilizing milk and other liquids by heating and subsequently cooling in a vessel or vessels given a complex rocking and shaking motion during the treatment, the liquid is inserted in receptacles 10 which are placed in perforated baskets 11 and these baskets are supported one above the other in a drum 12 which is then placed on a carrier 13 in the sterilizing tank 5. The carrier 13 is supported in and secured to the tank 5 by springs 14, 15. The tank 5 is pivotally carried by hollow trunnions 8 through one of which steam for sterilizing is supplied to a perforated coil 9 inside the tank, and through the other the cooling water is subsequently fed to the tank. The tank 5 is rocked by a rod 17 attached to an eccentric 18 driven by a pulley 19, thus imparting a complex shaking movement to the carrier 13 and receptacles 10. In modified forms, the side springs 15 may be disposed nearer the bottom or may be dispensed with, and buffers may be provided to control the movement of the carrier 13. A tangentially disposed abutment, or a short chain or other means may also be provided for starting this movement.
