Feb. 15, 1927 Starch depolymerization products.-Starch is depolymerized or degraded by heating with ethylene glycol or monochlorhydrin or mixtures thereof. The heating is conveniently carried out in reflux apparatus. The starch readily dissolves, giving products which are soluble in alcohol and water, which no longer exert a reducing action and do not give the iodine coloration, and which on hydrolysis with acids yield sugar. The glycol &c. is removed by distillation in vacuo or at comparatively low temperatures. In examples, starch is boiled with ethylene glycol, the latter eventually distilled off in vacuo leaving a syrup which possesses a sweet taste; starch is first boiled with ethylene glycol, and boiling continued after the addition of monochlorhydrin.
