Barrel hinges.-The female butt of a dustproot hinge is made by drop-forging a blank to produce in one operation a leaf formed at one end with a transverse depression 13 and side diverging walls 14, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and thereafter removing the divergence of the side walls so as to bring them to the proper gauge by means of a coining press. The complete hinge is shown in Fig. 10. A blank 10 is drop-forged to produce a leaf 11 with a hook-shaped extension 12 having the diverging side walls 14. The extension 12 is then bent upwardly so that it lies above the plane of the leaf 11. The butt is next placed in a coining press having an anvil or gauge of a length equal to the required distance between the inner surfaces of the walls 14, the dies being operated until the walls are straight and parallel. Holes 19 are drilled for the hinge pin, which positions the socket member 23 of the male part of the butt member 16. The member 23 is largely covered or concealed by the side walls 14 and the extension 12 of the other butt member.
