Coating bakers' goods.-In tbe filling of open fragile pastries, such as tarts, waffles, &c., the filling-material is placed upon the pastries which are then carried between side guides and beneath a yielding wiper or scraper which presses the filling into the hollows, smooths the surface and assists in returning excess filling to the main container. As shown in Fig. 1, the pastries 4 are carried on a conveyer 3 between side guides 16, one of which is laterally adjustable to vary the working width of the machine. The filling is discharged from the container 1 by a roller 2 and the quantity thus applied to the pastry is regulated by a sliding gate 18 which can be fully opened for removal of obstructions by a lever 20. A stop 19 determines the working position of the gate 18. The filling is scraped from the roller 2 on to the pastries by a scraper 6, and is pressed into the hollows, and smoothed by a wiper 8 pivoted, by means of slotted eyes which allow vertical displacements, to the guides 16, the wiper being made in two parts so that it is adjustable to conform with the adjustable working width of the machine. The wiper may be composed wholly or partly of rubber, and the scraping pressure may be applied by a lever 11 and adjustable weight 10, or by springs. Alternatively, the wiper 8 may be fixed and the conveyer 3 supported from below by a resiliently mounted roller. The wiper 8 may have its lower edge serrated so that the projecting parts thereof sweep into the hollows of the pastry and remove some of the filling. Excess filling builds up at the back of the wiper 8 and is returned by the roller 2 to the hopper 1. a rake 17 removing pieces of broken pastry from the filling. When it is desired to apply a coating over the tops of the pastries, shoes or skids 12, adjustable on the wiper 8 by screws, bear on the tops of the pastries and maintain the lower edge of the wiper spaced from the pastries. The pastries are prevented from rising from the conveyer by similar skids 14 adjustable by screws 13. The discharge of filling from the hopper 1 is varied to suit the adjustable working width of the machine by an adjustable slide 23. A conveyer may replace the roller 2, the conveyer being arranged to engage the goods only for a short distance.
