Sound magnifying and directing appliances.-In order to reproduce the lower notes efficiently, a straight horn of the exponential type is made more than five feet in length and with a mouth area less than the area of a circle of a diameter equal to a quarter of the length. As shown, the born is square in cross section as viewed externally, and is made in two parts hinged or socketed together. The internal cross-section may be circular in the smaller part and octagonal in the larger part, strengthening ribs R being provided at the corners of the square cross-section with suitable filling material interposed. The sides of the horn may be secured by means of grooved corner strips O, Fig. 3. The mouth may be provided with a hood or reflector, as in Figs. 4 and 5. Projections may be provided near the mouth of the horn for attachment to a picture rail or tc projections in two adjoining walls of a room. The horn may be of cardboard, wood, veneer, metal, or other material, treated or untreated wth a phenolic condensation product or similar hardening material.
