Cigarette-making machines. - For measuring or controlling the density of the supply of tobacco to cigarette-making machines, the tobacco 2 is allowed to act as a screen between a source of radiation 6 and an instrument 7 that measures the intensity of radiation received or actuates a relay for controlling the feed device. The element 7 may be a selenium cell, or a pyrometer or bolometer, in circuit with an ampÞre meter 8 or a relay for controlling the feed. As shown, tobacco is fed by a belt 1 and falls between glass plates 3, 4 on to a cigarette-rod tape 5.
