Abstract

289,247. Sinclair, J., Smith, C. H., and Smith, L., (trading as Smith, C. H. & L. 0.). Aug. 23, 1927. Springs, arrangement of; equalizing load on wheels and springs; axle attachments.- In a road vehicle having more than one non-steering axle suspension springs inter-connected by equalizing levers, one or more ball-joints are interposed between the springs and the levers to obviate twisting of the springs when the axles are tilted laterally. The invention is described in connection with a suspension comprising springs 3, 3 connected respectively above and below the axles 1, 2 pivoted at their forward ends to brackets 5, 6 on the frame, and having their rear ends connected by shackles 8 to the ends of a lever 7 pivoted at 13 to the frame. Each shackle 8, Fig. 7, has one end 8 pivotally mounted on an elliptical or barrel-shaped pin 25 carried by the lever 7, while the other end 8b is forked and carries a similar pin 25a engaging the member 3b on the end of the spring. The part 8 of the shackle and the spring member 3 are rounded to permit free movement thereof between the plates 26 on the lever and between the arms of the fork 8. The connections between the springs and the brackets 5, 6 may be ball-points. Each lever 7 may be of H-section having its sides closed by plates 7a, Fig. 4, and the pivot 13, Fig. 3, may engage a sleeve 15 having a flange 16 secured to the lever. The bearing may be lubricated from a pipe 19 through a duct 20 and spiral grooves in the bearing surfaces of the pivot 13 and flanges 14, 16. A ball-bearing may be arranged between the flanges 14, 16, and a roller-bearing on the pivot 13. The springs at one of the ends of the axles may be mounted to rotate on the axle, i.e. the near side spring on one axle and the off-side spring on the other axle may be so mounted. The brakes on the axles 1, 2 may be of the band type simultaneously operable from a control rod 12 through levers 10 and flexible members 11.
