Abstract

289,010. Coe Manufacturing Co. (Assignees of Milbourn, F. TV.). April 19, 1927, [Convention date]. Cutting veneers.-In a veneer lathe the headstock and tailstock spindles are moved into engagement with the opposite ends of a log by independently controlled motors. The lathe comprises a triangular tailstoek 10 and headstock 11 braced by three tie-rods 12 and provided with transverse horizontal slides for a knife carriage 39. The headstock and tailstock spindles 13, 14 are identical, each consisting of a screwed rod slidably keyed within a sleeve 15 rotatably mounted in the supports 10, 11 and each driven by a gear 29 on the sleeves meshing with a pair of pinions on a common driving shaft 31, Fig. 2. Each spindle is moved axially by an internally secured sleeve 20, Fig. 1, rotatably mounted on the sleeve 15 by a flange 21 and carrying two wheels 22, 23, the latter being a hand wheel and the former a sprocket wheel engaging a chain 34 driven by an independent electric motor 35 or 36. A brake-band 25, hand operated at 28. engages a drum 24 on the headstock driving sleeve to check rotation of the spindle 13. The knife carriage 39 is fed to and from the work hy a pair of screwed spindles 40<a> engaging nuts on the carriage and rotated through bevel gears 46, vertical shafts 44, bevel gears 47 and a shaft 49 driven through a chain 51 from an electric motor 50. Cutting feed is applied to the knife carriage by reducing train of gearing 60 driven from the headstock spindle gear 29 and driving a clutch part 55 loose on the shaft 49. A second clutch part 54 splined to the shaft 49 is actuated by a hand lever 58 which also engages a spring influenced lever 62 so as to trip a switch 61 and prevent the motor 50 from being operated when the clutch 54, 55 is engaged. A notch 'in a bar 64 which supports the switch 61 retains the lever 58 in the open-clutch position. A controlling and reversing circuit for the motors is described, the motors being of the squirrel-cage three-phase type.
