The bars 4 are supported on a water-cooled bar 5 and arranged beneath a channel iron 9 supporting a cooling member 10 which protects the brickwork. The front flange 14 of the channel iron 9 prevents lateral movement of the bars 4 and serves as an air closure. Members 8 support the channel iron 9 and member 9<a> which carries the) bars 4. The side brickwork is separated from the grate by an air space 13.
