Abstract
287,356. Harris, J. June 2, 1927. Charges, agitating ani conveying.-In a superposed hearth ore-roasting furnace, means are provided for preventing or reducing the formation of dust by screening the ore from the furnace draught during its passage from one hearth to another and by providing, in the case of a cylindrical furnace. separate flues for the ascending air or gases. As shown in Fig. 1, the furnace comprises superposed hearths 11 - - 14 provided with rabbles 16, 17, secured to a central shaft 15, and formed alternately with central and peripheral openings for the downward passage of the ore. These openings are fitted with downwardly extending fixed conduits 21 closed at the lower end by rotary plates 22 each carrying a second conduit 23 which, when it registers with the conduit 21 forms a. continuous channel for the passage of ore from one hearth to the one below. In connection with the hearths having central openings, the plate 22, Fig. 5, is formed as a disc secured to the shaft 15, while in the case of those hearths having peripheral openings, the plate 22 is in the form of a curved strip carried on the end of the rabble arm 16, Fig. 9. When the furnace is of rectangular cross-section, the upward passage of the air or gases is effected through the usual corner flues disposed out of the path of the rabble arms, but in the case of cylindrical furnaces, special gas passages are provided, each comprising, as shown in Fig. 3, a metal flue having a central part 25 built into the furnace wall 10 and enlarged upper and lower portions 27, 26 replacing part of and having an outlet below the respective hearths 13, 14. These flues are formed with radial partitions 28, Fig. 2, and are arranged on opposite sides of adjacent hearths to cause the gases to take a zig-zag course through the furnace to the outlet 20.
