Abstract

284,670. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 3, 1927, [Convention date]. Chlorine derivatives of lignite, and the Lilce.- Lignite and similar fossil materials, degraded by means of sulphite or by any other means are subjected to the action of chlorine in the presence of alkali, cape being taken to maintain a neutral or weakly alkaline reaction till towards the end of the process. Light coloured, water soluble products containing chlorine are obtained. The expression " degraded lignite or the like " means a lignite or similar fossil material which has been rendered soluble in water and dilute acetic acid and which cannot be re-precipitated from its aqueous solution. Such a product may be obtained bv heating lignite with an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite for 10 hours under a reflux condenser, the liquor being then diluted and a small quantity of caustic soda added, after which the sediment is removed. The clear solution of the degradation product is used as the initial material for the process of the invention. In an example lignite, degraded by means of sulphite, is dissolved in water and chlorinated in a closed vessel, caustic soda being added gradually at the same time. The reaction product is precipitated in a finely divided stabs due to increasing salt content, and on pressing and drying the free acids are obtained as a yellow powder which precipitates gelatine. From the filtrate a product can be isolated by extraction - which also precipitates gelatine but differs from the first product in that it is not precipitated from concentrated aqueous solution by strong .acids.
