Abstract
284,277. Soc. Amary et Poulet. Jan. 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Indicators actuated by floats.-The level of liquid fuel in the tank of a motor vehicle operates a float device the movements of which are transmitted and indicated electrically at another point on the vehicle. A float 1 operates a spindle 6 through bevel gearing 4, 5, the spindle 6 passing through a tubular member 7<1> fitted with stuffing boxes 8 and filled with glycerine to prevent leakage of petrol. The float and its associated parts are carried by a filler cap 9. A brush 12 carried by the spindle 6 bears on a potentiometer resistance 14, Figs. 1 and 8, and a brush 13 bears on a semicircular contact 17. The receiver, Fig. 4, comprises a casing 19 carrying a spindle 20 with two iron blades 22, 23, set 180‹ apart, and a pointer 24 moving over a dial 25. A coil 26 is arranged in the centre of an iron ring 27 on which are mounted four coils 28 - - 31, crossconnected to one another and to the potentiometer as shown. The point 32 is connected to the circular contact 17. The potentiometer is connected at 35, 36 with a source of direct or alternating current. If the brush 12 is midway along the resistance 14 the current strengths in the pairs of coils 29, 30 and 28, 31 are equal, and the resultant magnetic field causes the blades 22, 23 to occupy a line between the coils 29, 31. A change in liquid level causes a movement of the brush 12, and this renders unequal the magnetic fields due to the two pairs of coils, so that the resultant field is in a different direction and the pointer is displaced. The indications are independent of the applied voltage, and direct or alternating current may be used. The current may be taken from the primary of an ignition magneto, and the high resistance of the coils does not appreciably affect the working of the magneto. The apparatus is applicable for signalling the indications of other instruments such as gauges, thermometers, telegraphs, and the like.
