Abstract
284,254. Schars, A. J. Jan. 26, 1927, [Convention date]. Surface treatment with liquid materials.-Apparatus for spreading, in hot or cold state, materials such as asphalt, bitumen, tar or the like for the maintenance of roadways, has a number of co-axial walls dividing the apparatus into zones through which the material is supplied. The apparatus is secured by the plate 2, Fig. 4, to the rear of a vehicle and its inlet 12 is connected by a pipe 24 to the supply tank 15 on the vehicle. Its spindle 5 is geared by bevel gearing 7, 6 to the cross shaft 8 driven through chain and friction gearing by one of the wheels 20 of the vehicle. This gear can be thrown in and out by means of a handle 23 operated by the driver. The spindle 5 carries the coaxial walls of the spreader; the inner-most wall is cylindrical and the others are conical, the inclination of the walls to the axis increasing successively outwards. Helical vanes 30 are arranged between the walls and apertures 33 are made in the walls. The material from the tank 15 enters the inner-most chamber and by means of the apertures 63 and vanes 30 is discharged from all the divisions of the spreader. In a modification, the annular spaces between the conical walls are open at the top and the walls are perforated. In another modification. for thin liquids or sand, a bowl 43, Fig. 10, with radial vanes and a perforated base 45 is employed. In another modification, a perforated conical bowl 47, Fig. 12, has coaxial conical partitions 48 between which the material passes.
