Tobacco. - A stripping - machine comprises a combl i k e stripping- member and means adjustable relatively to the member for varying the effective area of the spaces between the teeth. For adjusting the comb itself transversely to its support 1, the latter is formed with slots 5 and is further drilled for the passage of screws 6, which also engage blocks 7 slidable in the slots and secured rigidly to the comb 9. This adjustment permits the regulation of the amount by which the tops of the teeth of the comb 9 project above the support 1. To prevent the jamming of small stalks between the roots of the teeth, and the passage of part of the leaf-web when larger leaves are being stripped, a second member 14 is adjustably mounted in front of the comb 9. Similar slots 10, screws 11, and blocks 11<a> to those used for the first member are employed, and the member 14 may be mounted on the comb, or on the main support 1 through the provision of slots in the comb. Proper engagement with the recesses of the bar 14 is ensured by spring-pressed blocks 15<a> mounted on an upper bar 16. Blocks, springs, &c. may also be provided upon the member 14, which may itself be resiliently mounted, and may be in sections. Such sections may consist of wood, metal, &c., mounted on springs, or may be in the form of U-springs arranged with the limbs parallel to the leaf, the upper and free limb of the spring engaging the stem; in other forms, blocks of rubber, or a strip of rigid material with an india-rubber flange, may be used. In all cases the leaf-engaging surface should be slightly grooved.
