Abstract

283,369. White, A. E., (Bowen Products Corporation). March 15, 1927. Actuating by liquid pressure; stroke, varying; two barrels in series.-In a system wherein a pump supplies lubricant to a branched conduit system 8, lubricant supplied to each branch depressing a piston 12, Fig. 4, arranged in a cylinder 3 so as to eject a charge of lubricant contained beneath the piston to an outlet 25 which may be provided with a non-return valve 18, an enlarged head 26 at the lower end of the piston stem 28 moves through the opening in an annular flexible washer 16 held against a shoulder 40 at the lower end of the cylinder by a spring 14 arranged between the piston and a metal washer 15, the adjacent edges of the washer 15 and shoulder 40 being rounded so that the inner edge of the washer 16 is movable to two oppositelyinclined positions to prevent outflow from the cylinder in one position and to permit such flow in the other position. The spring 14 normally maintains the piston 12 at the top of the cylinder 3, the inner edge of the washer 16 being inclined upwards. During the operation of the pump, lubricant passes into the space above the piston through a slot 27 in a nut 13 securing the parts of the piston assembly together and through grooves 2 in the upper end of the cylinder 3 to the space beneath the piston. The pressure of lubricant causes the washer 16 to be pressed tightly against the head 26, preventing outflow, and the unbalanced pressure on the piston causes the latter to move downwards until the grooves 2 are closed. Increased pressure acting on the whole area of the piston then causes the washer 16 to reverse to the position shown and the piston moves down until the head 26 contacts with the bottom of a chamber 5, ejecting the oil trapped beneath the piston. When the pressure in the system is relieved, the spring 14 returns the piston to its normal position and the space below the latter is again filled through the grooves 2, the upper rounded edge of the head 26 causing the washer 16 to reverse to its original position. One or more metal washers 94 may be placed in the bottom of the chamber 5 to limit the stroke of the piston. The pump may comprise a cylinder 44, Fig. 7, having inlet ports 45 communicating with a reservoir 43, a piston 46 being normally held at the top of its stroke by a. spring 47. A discharging spring 48 is compressed by downward movement of a member 49 which is locked in the depressed position by a catch 54. At the end of the stroke, a head 52 on the plunger rod 53 releases the catch 54 and allows the member 49 to return to its normal position.
