Abstract
282,500. Smith, J. Sept. 23, 1926. Limbs, artificial.-The fingers and thumb of an artificial hand consist of spiral springs which are opened and closed by flat springs 6, 6a. Flexible wires 5 extend from the tips of the fingers and thumb to prevent backward bending. The springs are secured at their lower ends between two transverse members 7 which can be moved upwards to bend the springs 6 by means of a cord 19 attached to a pivoted lever 17 attached to the members 7 by a rod 16. A detent 22 holds the lever 17 in any position by engaging in teeth 21 from which it can be released by a spring- controlled knob 25. The members 7 are guided by rods 8 which are surrounded by cushioning springs 8<a>. The spring 6a for operating the thumb is attached to a member 11 which slides on a rod 12, the member 11 being connected by a rod 13 having a pin-and-slot connection with the members 7. The fingers thus commence to close before the thumb. The hand is closed by a plate 27 carrying a key-shaped member 28 having a projection 28<a> which engages with one of a series of holes 31 in an end-plate 30 on the fore-arm, Fig. 5. Ball-bearings 32 are provided between the hand and arm.
