Abstract
282,216. Short, A. E., and Short, H. O. Dec. 20, 1926. Gravity, determining centre of.- Apparatus for weighing and ascertaining the centre of gravity of aircraft comprises a frame carrying two adjustable supports each carried by its own weighing machine, the supports being capable of vertical adjustment over their weighing machines relative to each other. The apparatus comprises two triangular frames A, B, within each of which is a vertical strut supported upon a weighing machine E or G through an intermediate lever. One strut terminates at the upper end in a knife-edge C<4> and the other strut terminates in a pin F<4> The struts are each formed in two screwed parts so as to be capable of extension in an upward direction by rotating hand-wheels C<3>. F<3>. A beam H is carried upon the knife-edge C' and upon the pin F<4>. Adjustable feet A<3>, B<3> and wheels A <4>, B<4> are provided for levelling and transporting purposes respectively. Each of the struts is provided with a graduated scale and pointer for indicating the angular position of the beam H, and a micrometer reading is provided on the periphery of the hand-wheels. In determining the weight and position of the centre of gravity of a flying boat, two of the abovedescribed devices are used one at each side of the hull and parallel therewith. Chocks K and L on the beams H are engaged under the wings and the flying boat is raised by turning the handwheels C', F<3> the weight being given by adding together the four readings of the weighing machines. The beams H and the flying boat carried thereby axe then set at a definite inclination to the horizontal first in one direction and then in the other, and in each case the altered weights upon the struts are observed on the weighing machines. The figures thus obtained enable the horizontal and vertical positions of the centre of gravity to be computed.
