Closure members; repairs, facilitating.-A stop &c. valve for steam and other fluids is provided with multiple closures in different planes, the main closure consisting of a solid imperforate piston or plunger 24, Fig. 2, and allied packing elements 25, 32, 33, and secondary closure being provided by a collar 36 adapted to seat upon the upper side of the seating ring 49. The packing can be tightened up simultaneously from below, as shown. Several other arrangements were described in the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) ; for example, in the screw-actuated arrangement shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled), the piston 16, having a renewable screwed endpiece 31, seats within a packing ring 32 secured against a loose abutment washer 24 by a cage member 25 with packing 33 held in position by a screwed cap 27. A collar 35 on the stem 16 is formed, with an upper closure surface 36 adapted to seat on a rib 20 on the cover when the stuffing-box packing 38 is to be renewed. A lower closure surface 37 seats on the top rim 22 of the seating partition for the repair of the piston packing 32 and packing 33 which are expelled downwards by the shoulder 34. In a modification the packings 32, 33 and cage member 25 are disposed above the seating partition, and a separate expelling plunger and supplementary closure are provided below the seating. Fig. 4 (Cancelled) shows a fluid-pressure actuated valve in which the piston is formed with a bevelled head 35 which seats upon the partition, at 22, when it has partially expelled the packing members and cage 32, 33, and 25. The piston may have, as before, a detachable end piece. Other variations are described and shown, including a check valve arrangement shown in Fig. 12 (Cancelled); the check valve may or may not, be provided with a screw for holding the valve closed when desired, and expelling the packings and cage retainer, and the piston closure is here dispensed with. This subject-matter is not described in the Specification as accepted.
