Abstract

280,809. Siemens - Schuckertwerke Ges., Steiner, L., and Gutmann, V. May 14, 1927. Indicators, electric.-A sounding device, more particularly for determining the level of brine and oil layers in an oil sounding, comprises a plummet carrying a switch which is actuated by a float when it reaches the liquid. A cable drum 4 carries a two-conductor cable 5 which is carried past a measuring wheel 12 and then over a roller 6 into the bore hole 10. One end of the drum is provided with a band brake with lever 17. One end of the cable 18 is connected to the terminal box 20 and to slip rings, and a pocket lamp battery 26 and buzzer 27 are also connected to the terminal box. The other end of the cable is connected to a plummet 29 enclosing a frame 30 carrying a cork float 33. The rod 31 carries a mercury switch 34 adapted to be operated by the float. A rod 39 carries a foot plate 40 and a cone 38, so that when the plate 40 strikes an obstruction the cone 38 actuates the bell crank lever 32, 37 and lowers the float, thereby actuating the mercury switch. The position of the liquid level is determined by the rising of the float, which actuates the switch to complete the circuit and sound the buzzer, while the bottom of the bore hole is determined by the stopping of the buzzer. The depths are read on the counter 14. A modification (Fig. 5, not shown) employs a hollow cylindrical float, pivoted eccentrically, to actuate the mercury switch. In another form (Fig. 6, not shown) the float and mercury switch may be combined in a single flow body of glass, and in another form (Fig. 7, not shown) the mercury switch is placed on a suspended body having a float at one side so that the body is tipped when the float is immersed. In Fig. 8, the float 72 is guided in the sleeve 73 and carries the mercury switch 74. The two contacts are at one end of a closed tube, and the circuit is made or broken when the tube in inverted. In Fig. 10, the electrodes 77, 78 are connected to the conductors 35, 36, and the float casing 79 is movable longitudinally on the plummet 29. The liquid 81 is a good conductor. During lowering, the casing 79 rests on the float until it reaches the liquid, when it stops and the electrodes 77, 78 become immersed in the liquid 81 and the circuit is completed. The plummet is then repeatedly raised and lowered in the oil until the liquid 81 has been expelled and replaced by oil, so that the circuit is broken. On further lowering to reach the level of brine, the circuit is again completed. The device may be used to measure the conductivity of the liquid by connecting a measuring device in place of the buzzer 27, Fig. 1.
