Abstract

280,611. British Hartford-Fairmont Syndicate, Ltd., and Wardley, T. June 18,1926. Delivering molten metal.-Apparatus for feeding molten glass from a receptacle through a discharge opening comprises means for moving the glass positively in a plane substantially at right angles to the axis of the discharge opening in order to keep the glass of uniform temperature and consistency. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the molten glass is contained in a forehearth A and is discharged through an opening B by the reciprocations of a plunger C, the size of the charge of glass being regulated by a flow-controlling tube surrounding the plunger, as described in Specification 194,675. According to the invention, another tube E surrounds the tube D and is provided on its outer surface with projections, vanes, or fins E'. The tube is rotated or moved angularly, and the projections E<1> stir or move the glass. The tube E may be dispensed with and the projections E' may be formed either on the tube D or on the plunger C when the tube D is not used. In another construction, the tube E may be provided with internal projections or it may be formed with spaces that leave depending parts dipping into the glass. The tube E may be adjusted vertically, if desired, to enable the stirring movement to be imparted at any desired depth in the glass. When the tubes D, E are not used, the plunger C is provided with a worm wheel F, Fig. 7, which is engaged by a worm on a spindle H journaled in a frame carried by the plunger. A pinion J secured to the spindle engages one or the other of two parallel racks L, M formed on the interior of the frame K which is movable horizontally. The frame is moved in unison with the reciprocations of the plunger C so that the pinion H is engaged by the racks alternatively on its downstroke and on its upstroke. The plunger is thus rotated continuously and the projections C' stir the glass.
