Abstract

218,888. Pratt, W. L., (Rankin, C. H.). Oct. 1, 1923. Delivering molten metal.-Relates to a feeder of the kind comprising a receptacle having an orifice in its lower part through which the glass is discharged, and plunger movable in alignment with the orifice within a vertically movable controlling- tube which dips into the glass in the receptacle. According to the invention, the receptacle, plunger, and controlling-tube are rotated at the same angular velocity, so that the molten glass as it runs into the receptacle is distributed around the plunger and ensures an even distribution of temperature in the column of glass discharged from the orifice. The receptacle 1 is rotatably supported by a ball race on a fixed part 4 of the framing, and is rotated by a worm 6 on a driving-shaft 7. The bottom of the receptacle is provided with an orifice 9 above which a vertically reciprocating plunger 10, surrounded by a flow-controlling tube 11, is arranged. The receptacle receives a stream of molten glass from a tank and this glass is expelled in gobs by the reciprocation of the plunger, the tube 11 being adjusted vertically to control the size of the gobs. Both the tube and the plunger are rotated at the same angular speed as the receptacle, so that the inflowing glass is spread evenly on the surface of the glass already in the cup, and the flow to the orifice takes place evenly from all parts of the receptacle.
