Rolling.-Wire wound on a reel 10 and heated by electricity, gas &c. in a muffle furnace 14 is reduced in a succession of groups of rolls, the speed of each successive group being adjusted so that the wire can sag between each group, and each group, consisting of two pairs of rolls, the speed of which is such that the wire is tensioned between each pair. Each groups of rolls at right angles to each other are connected by guides 5 which facilitate the initial threading of the wire through the roll, but which are hinged and self opening to allow sag when the wire is threaded, Fig. 3. The rolls are driven by motor from a resilient clutch 13 which allows a slow starting while each individual pair of rolls is driven by chain or toothed gear 7, and is provided with a clutch 9 to stop any desired group. A blower 15 is provided for cooling the rolls in any suitable way and also for removing scale. Each roll surface is formed by a sleeve symetrically grooved so that it can be interchanged or reversed. The reel 11 may receive intermediate sizes of wire directly from any one group of rolls by inserting tubular guides independent of the hinged guides.
