Abstract

279,578. Webster, C. H. Aug. 13, 1926. Feeding and winding weebs.-In apparatus for rewinding remnants of webs of paper or other material from reels, the cone centre for supporting the remnant reels are carried by pedestals which are adjustable transversely to suit the width of the reel, to separate them to receive the reel, and to adjust the web laterally. In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the remnant reel d is supported between pedestals c<1> at the front of the machine, and is led over smoothing and tensioning rollers h, j, h<1> to a rewinding-reel f riding on two winding-drums e, one of which is driven from an electric motor i; the tensioning-roller j is mounted in bearing blocks j<1> engaged by springs j<2> adjusted by screws j<3>; rotary cutter mechanism g<2> is provided for slitting the web longitudinally while it is being rewound. The pedestals c<1> are each connected by a boss c<2>, Fig. 2, to a section c<3> of a lead screw operable independently by hand-gear n, n<1>, and the two sections c<3> are connected centrally by a spring clutch c<4> controlled by levers m at each side of the machine, so that the pedestals can be traversed independently or simultaneously. A cone centre o<2> provided with a flange o<3> is attached by bolts o<4> to a flange o<1> on a spindle o mounted in the pedestal c<1>; spiral springs o<5> are located on the bolts and in recesses in the adjacent faces of the flanges o<1>, o<3>; a brake wheel p engaged by an adjustable shoe p<1> may be provided on the outer end of the spindle o. Sling hooks d<2>, Fig. 1, for lifting the remnant reel d are carried by cables d' passing over pulleys b<3> to capstan drums k<1>. Brackets f<1> for the spindle of the reel f are carried by cables f<2> passing over pulleys b<4> to capstan drums l<1>; the cutter mechanism may be similarly suspended. The side members b of the framework are provided with machined surfaces b<2> to serve as guides for the brackets f<1> and also for spindle brackets g<1> of the cutter mechanism. In a modified arrangement, the remnant reel is lifted by a platform operated by gearing including racks on four supporting legs extending into a pit below the bed plate of the machine, and co-operating pinions on two intergeared parallel shafts, one of which is driven by worm gearing from an electric motor.
