Abstract
279,383. Alderfer, S. W. Oct. 20, 1926, [Convention date]. Extrusion machines. - Beads for pneumatic tyres are formed by drawing a number of separate wires through a heated die, forcing rubber in and around the wires during the passage through the die, cooling the band formed, compressing it and winding it to form a bead. The wires 4 are drawn from separate spools through a die 5, sets of wires passing over and below a grooved wedgeplate 35 held by arms 34 in a die to a throat 44, rubber being forced by a feed screw through a chamber 41 in the die so as to surround the wires and further rubber being consolidated about the issuing band by a conical die 45 through which the band passes to a cooling device 10. The band is drawn through the die by a pressure device comprising upper and lower pulley belts 54, 55, a lower fixed guide plate 60 and an upper weighted pressure plate 61, which maintains the band in flat position and at the same time compresses it. The formed band passes from the compressor over a compensating pulley 68 to a winder 15 where it is formed into a bead in layers covered by a fabric 16 and afterwards compressed to the usual triangular section shown in Fig. 14. The winder runs intermittently to allow of the bead being severed, and during the spell the compensator pulley takes up the slack.
