Abstract

279,175. Simmons, J. T. July 23, 1926. Wells. - To test the productivity of a formation encountered in drilling an oil &c. well without removing the mud - laden flushing liquid from the well, a single string of pipe or casing, closed to the contents of the well, is lowered into the well, and sealing means thereon is caused to shut off the formation from the upper strata; the pipe or casing is then opened to the formation to allow fluids from the latter to ascend therein. As shown, a pipe 23 has at the lower end a valve comprising a member 19 threaded to the pipe and provided with ports 17, 18, the member 19 being mounted on an upper extension 7 of a member 4 with ports 5, 6, and the members 4, 19 being relatively rotatable to bring the ports 17, 18 and 5, 6 into or out of communication; a pin 25 and slot 24 limit such relative rotation. The lower end of the member 4 is bevelled and below it is arranged a conical packer 15 of rubber, lead &c. A reduced bore 2 is formed at the foot of the well and extends into the formation to be tested. The pipe 23 is lowered into the well with the valve 4, 19 closed and the packing 15 is forced info the mouth of the reduced bore 2 to shut off the latter from the mudladen fluid in the well 3. The valve is then opened by rotating the pipe 23, when the well may come into production, or if the pressure is insufficient for production, fluid may flow from the formation into the pipe 23 which, after closing of the valve, is then raised to the surface for examination. A perforated pipe 12, closed at its lower end, may be arranged below the packer 15.
