Abstract

278,857. Milledge, S. Z. Sept. 10, 1926. C h e c k elastic valves. - A non-return valve at the end of the exhaust pipe of an internal-combustion engine comprises a block 9 having radiating tapering arms 10 to which a pair of resilient plates 14 are attached by screws 13. The block 9 may be an aluminium casting, the inner parts of the plates'14 being replaced by an integral part to which the plates, which may be of steel, are attached; the arms 10 may be recessed to receive strips of insulating material to prevent noise from impact of the plates. The Provisional Specification describes non-return valves comprising (a) a conical piece of flexible material-e.g. asbestos,-the smaller end of which is attached by a split sleeve to the exhaust pipe, and two springs which press apart diametrically opposite points of the larger end to cause the cone to take a fish-tail shape and (b) a horn-shaped member, across the rectangular open end of which an asbestos flap is retained by resilient steel wires which may be incorporated in, 'or bear against, the material of the flap.
