Progressive evaporators.-Solvents used in the extraction of oils are recovered from the solution of oil and solvent, particularly that obtained from the apparatus described in Specification 255,923, [Class 91, Oils &c.]. by distillation in a preliminary still which controls automatically the supply of solvent to a number of smaller stills arranged in series, in parallel, or in series parallel. The preliminary still 1, Fig. 4, is connected to the usual condensers by a pipe not shown and by a pipe 6 to a number of smaller stills 3 arranged two or more in series, two sets of series being arranged in parallel. The still 1, Fig. 1, is heated by a steam coil 2 and the supply of solvent passing through the pipe 6 is controlled by a valve 5 comprising a pair of concentric perforated sleeves, the inner of which is rotated by a ball float 4 while the outer is adjustable by a rod 5<a>, the flow of solvent being thus adjusted automatically according to variations in the density and height of the solution. Each still 3, Fig. 2, is fitted with a tray 8 provided with baffles for the circulation of the solution delivered from a pipe 16, and is heated by open and closed steam coils 9, 7, the residue being delivered to the next still through a syphon 11, the position of which is controlled by a rod 13. Alternatively, the small stills may be arranged in one casing as a series of superposed trays 28 . . 32, Fig. 5, provided with spiral channels 33 and heating coils 35, and supplied with solvent from a preliminary still through an open tank 25 having a U-shaped discharge pipe 27.
