Abstract

278,739. Soc. Anon. Fonderia del Pignone. Oct. 8, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Mines, marine. - Relates to mines connected in pairs by a horizontal cable which when encountered by a passing ship causes the mines to swing in and explode against the ship. According to the invention, the explosion is brought about a given time after the ship encounters the cable, determined by a dashpot or a screw propeller. As shown in Fig. 7, the mines c, d are connected together by a cable b attached to spring plungers 17, 17<1> intended to close switches 16, 16<1> when the mines are laid to set towing propellers in action. Each mine is provided with a small screw propeller 7 on a screw spindle 8 in engagement with a sliding nut 10 carrying a firing pin 11. When a passing ship drags the cable b, the propeller 7 is caused to rotate and draws the nut 10 against a spring 12, until the nut reaches the point 14, when it is freed from the spindle 8 and is thrust by the spring 12 against a percussion cap 15. In a modification, Fig. 5, the cable connecting the mines is attached to a bolt t connected to a dashpot piston k and to a firing pin u. After a given travel of the dashpot piston k, a joint s is freed, and the firing pin is thrust against the percussion cap v by a spring m. Projections x, w constitute the switch which is closed when the mines are laid, or a switch controlled by a separate spring is provided for this purpose. In other modifications, the firing is performed by the closing of the circuit of an electric igniter.
