Abstract

278,307. Commercial Solvents Corporation, (Assignees of Legg, D. A.). Oct. 1, 1926, [Convention date]. Bacteria, cultivating.-A process for rendering butylacetonic bacilli immune from epidemics of sluggishness consists in repeatedly subcultivating the bacilli in the presence of the filtrate from a sluggish fermentation, the culture being " heatshocked " at each transfer. A sterile carbohydrate mash is prepared and inoculated with a spore culture of butyl-acetone bacilli. It is then heat shocked, for instance by being raised to 100‹ C. for three minutes, to destroy vegetative cells, after which one or two drops of filtrate from a sluggishly fermenting mash is added. The filtrate is obtained by first removing all solids and then passing through a Berkefeld filter to remove bacteria. Fermentation is allowed to proceed until spores are developed. This spore culture is used to inoculate a fresh mash and the process is repeated, usually about ten times, until an immune culture is obtained. The immune bacilli are used in the production of acetone and butyl alcohol bv the fermentation of amylaceous and saccharine carbohydrates in the usual manner. Specification 4845/15, [Class 14 (ii), Beverages &c.], is referred to.
