Abstract

Winding webs.-In a web-winding apparatus, particularly for winding paper as it is delivered from a paper-making machine, the winding-shaft is initially supported out of contact with the main winding-drum and driven by a change speed gear actuated by the accumulation of material on the shaft, the speed of the winding-shaft being initially higher than normal to take up slack in the web and being gradually educed to normal. As applied to a winding-apparatus such as described in Specification 278,083, in which the winding-shaft 19 is initially supported in pivoted arms 17 so as to be out of contact with the main winding-drum 10 and in contact with an auxiliary winding-device 14. the device 14 is in the form of a roller extending throughout the length of the shaft, 19 and driven by a belt 15 passing round conical pulleys 100, 101. A beltshifting rod 102 is engaged by the vertical arm 103 of a bell-crank lever, the horizontal arm of which is in the path of an arm 104 on one of the arms 17. As the material accumulates on the shaft 19, the arms 17 are turned on their shaft 18 and the arm 104 actuates the bell-crank lever to move the belt 15 so as gradually to decrease the speed of the roller 14. The arrangement is such that when the material on the shaft 19 contacts with the drum 10, the speed of the roller 14 is equal to that of the drum 10.
