Cutting slices in succession. - A disc knife reciprocating table slicing machine is characterized by the combination of a substantially conical slice receiver, positively rotated by means connected with the mechanism of the slicing machine, and a stationary slice deflector extending partly around the edge of the knife. As shown in the Figure, the slice receiver 36 is journaled on a shaft 15 fixed in a bracket 14 extending from the machine base 10. The receiver is driven from the main shaft 13 by a shaft 17 and bevel gearing, the hub 18 of the receiver being secured to the gear 16. The receiver has an upright peripheral edge to prevent the slices from being thrown off by centrifugal force, the edge extending under the reciprocating table 12. The gears are so proportioned that the receiver 36 makes one revolution for each cutting stroke of the table, a stack of slices being thus produced. The peripheral speed of the receiver is slightly greater than the linear speed of the table 12 so that the slices, as they fall, are slightly stretched and the formation of wrinkles is prevented. The slice deflector and the slicing machine are preferably as described in Specification 271,308. The support 31 for the edges of the slices is carried by a bracket 32. The gearing may be designed to form a number of stacks or to arrange the slices in an overlapping formation similar to that described in Specification 214,908.
