Abstract

277,720. Craven, P. A. March 23, 1926. Tobacco pipes.-An absorbent element 8, which is made of a material capable of being cleaned by heating in a flame, is smaller than, and kept away from, the walls of the stem base and preferably projects into the pipe bowl 1. The element is made by mixing into a paste equal quantities of clay and coal dust with a solution of silicate of soda; this paste is moulded round a reinforcing wire 9, which may be straight, wavy, hollow, or in the form of a coil, and fired. The, wire 9 may have a loop 11 at one end and a flange 10 at the other end, or it may be in two pieces. The pipe bowl may have a recess to accommodate end of the element 8. One or more rings 12 may be provided on the element, the stem having a hollowed-out portion 6 which may have a tubular lining of aluminium, aluminium alloy, clay &c., the lining having a flanged end where it abuts against the mouthpiece to facilitate removal. Small holes 14 may be provided so that the draught may be varied by rotating the mouthpiece in its socket.
