Metal polishes. - Surfaces of chromium, for example, an electro deposit on another metal, are polished by the use of fine grained partly calcined hydrated alumina or bauxite, the calcining temperature being between 600‹ C. and 1000‹ C. Small quantities of other polishing materials, for example, emery, carborundum, artificial corundum, chromium sesquioxide, or sand may be added and the material may be made up in the form of blocks by mixing the powdered material with a binder consisting of stearic acid or beeswax or a mixture thereof; the material may be greased, before admixture with the wax, with petroleum jelly. A softer binder may be used, for example jellied soap, the bauxite being present to about 50 per cent of the weight of the soap. When the hard binder is used, the proportions may be 1 pound of bauxite, 0.5 pound of stearic acid, about 0.5 ounce of petroleum jelly,. and other abrasives about 1 ounce.
